RODI's Vision: A Sink Redefining Minimalism and Functionality

Winner of the Golden A' Furniture Design Award in 2016

RODI design team's Vision sink, a minimalist and functional design, inspired by modern architecture, is a testament to the "less is more" philosophy. This award-winning design, characterized by its geometric lines and exquisite simplicity, is a versatile addition to any modern kitchen.

The Vision sink is a unique two-piece set, comprising a sink and a glass cover or board. The minimalist sink is accentuated by a rectangular valve and overflow. The design team added 50mm in height at the upper zone of the bowl to increase the working area and conceal the tap. The bowl and drainer have a 10mm edge to accommodate accessories or the cover or board, made of silver tempered glass. The versatility of the sink is enhanced by allowing the cover or board to be applied on top of the bowl or the drainer, serving as a cover for the sink or as a chopping board.

The manufacturing process of the Vision sink begins with a mechanical pressing and bending process of each of the plates. This is followed by laser cutting and the joining of the plates using a welding process. In the end, the bowl is welded to the plate and the finishing process takes place. The sink is made from AISI 304 18/10 Stainless Steel, ensuring durability and longevity.

With total dimensions of 1100mm in width and 525mm in height, and a bowl dimension of 400mm in width, 400mm in height, and 200mm in depth, the Vision sink is a perfect fit for modern kitchens. The design is ergonomic, with each side of the sink having a specific function. The bowl and tap side serve as the washing zone, while the opposite side serves as the draining area. The glass cover/board adds more functions, as it can be used as a chopping board or as a cover to hide the bowl and the tap, creating a neat and tidy area.

The Vision sink was inspired by architectural works like those by Le Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Mies van der Rohe. The research for the design focused on modern architecture books such as Modern Architecture by Peter Gossel, drawing inspiration from the work of several architects, such as Dieter Rams in Principles of Good Design. These influences played a significant role in the design of the Vision kitchen sink.

One of the challenges faced during the design process was to create a sink that could interact with the user in the simplest and most functional way, creating an ergonomic and adjustable working area. The team had to overcome technical challenges such as deep pressing of 60mm and the elasticity of the stainless steel sheet/plate versus deformation, to achieve a perfect radius dimension.

The Vision sink, a product of the RODI design team's innovative thinking and meticulous attention to detail, is a perfect blend of minimalism and functionality. It not only serves as a practical addition to the kitchen but also adds an element of modern architectural design, making it a deserving winner of the Golden A' Furniture Design Award in 2016.
